Access: Huon, Derwent and Tyenna RiversProject DescriptionThis project will implement the recommendations of the Tasmanian Sport Fishing Tourism Development and Marketing Plan Phase 1 Access Plan in respect of Anglers Access River Projects. The Huon, Derwent and Tyenna rivers project will provide access to major river fisheries for anglers across Crown Reserves and negotiated access across private land. Appropriate infrastructure such as stiles over fences and access signage will be installed at each location. Access brochures will be developed for each river which will include a map of the river showing each access point and provide important information for local and visiting anglers including anglers code of conduct, regulation, safety, environmental issues and fishery management objectives. The brochures will be available in printed copy and PDF format via the AAT and IFS websites. The Access project will enhance the availability of information to anglers, support promotion of recreational angling to residents and visitors and enhance tourism opportunities. Angler dispersal to currently difficult to access locations will enhance the capacity of a sustainable fishery. How the project will undertakenAAT as the project coordinator will work closely with the local councils, angling clubs and the Recreational Fisheries Program Tas to implement the project. The Recreational Fisheries Program has agreed to access arrangements with The Crown for access across reserves and will negotiate access over private land under a licence arrangement. The Program will provide indemnity for landowners providing access. Local councils are committed to providing supporting signage, consultation and planning expertise. Angling Clubs have provided local knowledge and will provide volunteer labour to assist with the installation of stiles and signage. Recreational Fisheries Program Tas will produce and distribute the supporting brochures and maps, provide monitoring of the program and support the projects with compliance and surveillance assisted by Fishcare Volunteers. Project StatusIFS and AAT have been implementing the Anglers Access projects on the Macquarie and Huon rivers during 2009. The projects have involved negotiations with private and public landowners, completion of access agreements, riparian works including willow removal and installation of stiles, fences, water troughs and signs. With all the ‘one the ground’ work now essentially completed the final stage has been the development of the Anglers Access brochures for distribution in both hard copy from major tackle shops and via the IFS, Fishing Tasmania and AAT websites.
