MAX ELLIOTT

1921–2008

Growing up in the north-west of Tasmania, Max began his fishing life chasing river blackfish and freshwater crayfish. His introduction to trout fishing commenced when he was shown the tricks of “tickling a trout”. Being a robust man Max then tried his hand at catching trout the lawful way. During the 1950s Max joined the North Western Fisheries Association and over the years filled many roles including President, Secretary, and Treasurer. He was also patron for several years, and his commitment to the Association saw him gain life membership. One of Max’s most significant achievements was assisting in the establishment of a government-funded scholarship through the University of Tasmania to train a biologist with the condition that the scholarship beneficiary serve a term with the Inland Fisheries Commission. Two graduates of this program went on to be future Inland Fisheries Commissioners. Max Elliott will long be remembered for his contribution to the Tasmanian Fishery through his dedication to the grassroots fishing community in the State’s north-west.
