HECTOR VINCENT JONES

1907–1991

Hector was born at the Salmon Ponds where his grandfather, John Stannard, and then father, Michael, were Keepers of the Ponds. His father was killed in a motor accident while delivering trout to the Dee River in 1925. With Hector being too young to be in charge of the Ponds his mother was appointed to the position with Hector to perform the duties until being appointed in 1927, he held the position until 1959. He assisted in the collection of eggs from Mountain Creek, Lake Sorell and later Liawenee and also did considerable work at the Great Lake spawning streams. In 1959 he was appointed Secretary of the newly constituted Inland Fisheries Commission and held this post until retiring in 1971, having spent all of his working life serving the Commissions. Hector was made a Life Member of the Northern Tasmanian Angling Association in 1970, the Southern Tasmanian Licensed Anglers’ Association in 1971 and the New Norfolk Licensed Anglers’ Association in 1973.
